T173 - Engineering the Future

Welcome to the 2012 session of the T173 course, "Engineering the Future". This is a really interesting course that covers many current topics in Engineering and provides a chance to appreciate the fundamental concepts of Engineering.

It is a level 1 course which you should not find too difficult, but I appreciate that some of you are new to the OU and most of you will have other commitments at work or at home, so if you have any problems, please contact me and I will try to help.

This course is enabled for eTMAs, which are the preferred choice and is so much quicker and easier than snail mail. (The latter may still be available if you so choose.) Please send an opening TMA00 to ensure we have communication. There is no need to have any content, but do make sure you save your files in the .doc format and not the newer .docx format, which is the default in MSWord 2007 and 2010, nor the equivalent .odt format from LibreOffice. If you haven't already bought MS Word, I recommend LibreOffice which is free. There is a version on the OU CD, but better to download the latest version from Libreoffice.

LibreOffice, which is the community version of OpenOffice, is just as good as MSWord and more than adequate for this course, but if you insist on MSWord then remember that as a student you can buy a copy for less than £40 at MS Office for Students

My email address is f.p.cook@open.ac.uk. Please reply to this address and then I know we have communication.

At the first tutorial, I hope to meet you all. This will be an introductory session, so please come prepared to talk about the course, what you hope to get out of it and any difficulties you may wish to air. The meetings are at Manchester University in the Samuel Alexander Building, Oxford Road, Manchester, behind the Student Union which is opposite the Holy Name Church. There is a public car-park near by, turn into Denmark Road opposite the Manchester Royal Infirmary and follow the signs. Alternatively there are plenty of buses from Piccadilly Gardens. Services 42, 43,142,143 are the main ones.
